TROY, Mich. -- Police in Troy said a 911 caller reported gunmen and shots fired at a house on Friday in the 1000 block of North Lake Road.

It was all an elaborate prank by a teenager in another state.

Troy Police Lt. Robert Redmond said officers responded to the house after the caller, a 16-year-old boy, said four men were in the home with weapons while he hid in the closet. The teen said shots were being fired.

"We arrived on the scene under the impression that there were shots being fired in the home," Redmond said. "When we arrived at the house the mother and son, the teenager, just happened to be coming out of the house."

Redmond said the woman and teen were confronted by armed officers who ordered them to the ground.

"The kid began screaming, 'Swatting! It's swatting! It's a prank,'" Redmond said.

Redmond said officers found out the Troy teen had been playing an online video game with a teen in Boston, Mass. During the course of the game, the teens got into a fight.

Redmond said the Boston teen decided to "swat" the Troy teen. The term "swatting" means to call 911 using a computer online application that allows someone to change the appearing telephone number they are calling from.

The Boston teen was the one who reported the phony gunmen and gunshots at the Troy house.

"We will find him," Redmond said. "Yes, we can. And yes, we will."

Redmond said this will be a federal case.
