What was the high spot of this fight?
For five rounds these two went at it, and there were a lot of good points. It's one of those fights that will reveal more as you continue to watch it. A few highlights include a nice combo from Cruz at the end of round 2, where he put together all the pieces of his unique striking style, and an aggressive start to round 5 from both men.
Where do these guys go from here?
I outlined why I think Cruz vs. Faber 3 is the best fight moving forward. If they go a different route, then Cruz needs a new title challenger. His only real options are former champion Brian Bowles or Demetrious Johnson. Since Bowles seems to have suffered a broken hand, and has a recent loss to Cruz, I would give the nod to Johnson.
Faber could get a rubber match with Cruz, but aside from that fight, he's likely out of the title picture for quite some time. But he's still the biggest name in the division, and should still be included in marquee match-ups. It's a few years late, but I think now is a good time to run the Faber vs. Miguel Torres fight that once had so much interest for WEC fans.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Now. I'm not sure it's the Fight of the Year that some people are claiming, but it's a very good 5 round title defense, with both men going hard for the full 25 minutes.
